Gene trails a forest ranger suspected of permitting illegal logging, mistakenly believing he killed the ranger after shooting a mountain lion. In reality, the ranger was murdered by a logging associate to conceal a tussock moth infestation that would profit the logging company. Gene sells his camp to support the ranger's daughter and later discovers the infestation, leading to a program to spray the area with DDT. However, the spraying is blamed for animal deaths, and Gene suspects a mysterious plane is responsible.
