Czech immigrant Karel Novak arrives in America, only to discover he can't afford the entrance fee. He jumps ship and swims to Manhattan, where he's awestruck by the skyscrapers and opulence. He meets a chorus girl, Sylvia, who takes him in and helps him find work. As they fall in love, Karel tries to become a citizen, but unknowingly hires a shyster lawyer who turns him in for a profit.
