Nazi-occupied Rome, where life is difficult but not yet brutal. A widowed mother, Pina, is about to marry her neighbor Francesco, despite their differences. The day before the wedding, Francesco's friend Giorgio, a resistance fighter, seeks shelter with them. Giorgio's mission requires the help of Catholic priest Don Pietro, who sees his work as serving God. As Pina and Giorgio's girlfriend Marina take steps to improve their lives, they may face tragic consequences.
