The monstrance with the relic of St. Magnus, previously stolen by Kluftinger as a young policeman, is returning home. Kluftinger is tasked with solving the murder of an old woman, Frau Zahn, who rented a shed to a group planning to steal the monstrance again. He hopes to get help from Heinz Rösler, an art thief in prison in Vienna, but Rösler's motives are unclear.
