Stevie "Smudger" Smith, a drug dealer and addict, faces a turning point when his wife Marie gives birth to a baby, who appears to be addicted to drugs. As Marie decides to quit using, Stevie's addiction becomes a major obstacle in their relationship, leading to the authorities taking away Marie and the baby. A tough social worker, Liam Kane, tries to help Stevie overcome his addiction by joining a group therapy session, but Stevie's struggles are further complicated by his encounters with a drug-addicted hooker, Gail, who seems content with her lifestyle.
