Magnolia, daughter of Captain Andy and his wife Parthy, grows up on their show boat. Parthy fires Julie, Magnolia's idol and best friend, despite Andy's objections. Years later, Magnolia becomes a leading lady and falls in love with Gaylord Ravenal, a riverboat gambler. They elope, but the death of Captain Andy forces them to leave the boat and move to Chicago to escape Parthy's disapproval.
