Song of Scheherazade background

Song of Scheherazade

A young Russian naval officer finds inspiration in a passionate encounter with a cabaret dancer in 1865 Spanish Morocco, leading him to create the iconic symphonic suite Scheherazade.

In 1865, a group of Russian Naval Academy cadets on shore leave in Morocco discover a family of once-wealthy Spanish colonists, whose daughter secretly performs in a cabaret. Romantic complications arise, but the future composer Nicky Rimsky-Korsakov is more focused on finding inspiration for his music than on pursuing the daughter's affections.
