In the 1940s, Jack and Kay Walsh's lives are turned upside down when Jack enlists in the Navy after the US enters World War II. Kay, who was previously dependent on Jack, decides to follow the government's request to contribute to the war effort by getting a job at a factory. She becomes a riveter at MacBride, a military aircraft manufacturer, and befriends Hazel, a streetwise and aspiring singer.
