Ed Branish, an English teacher at Mingo Junction High School, is dissatisfied with his job and frequently belittles those around him with literary quotes. When he's forced to supervise the wrestling team, he lashes out at Nick Kilvitus, a senior who's struggling with poverty and family issues. Nick's been working at a steel mill to support his alcoholic father and has missed classes, leading Ed to accuse him of being lazy. However, as they work together on the wrestling team, they discover more about each other and themselves.
