In the Tehachapi desert, a photographer, street artist, and documentary filmmaker, JR, gains access to a high-security US prison to create an art project. JR gives a voice to inmates, who have spent years in confinement, by giving them a platform and a sense of self-respect through art. A temporary photo collage in the courtyard becomes an allegory for internal liberation, while stories of prisoners and their relatives explore the themes of mistake, guilt, sin, and forgiveness.
