In 1938 Berlin, a young Nazi diplomat's wife, Louise, falls in love with an artist and the Japanese ambassador's daughter, Mitsuko. When her husband, Heinz, discovers their affair, he tries to break them apart, but ultimately finds himself drawn to Mitsuko as well. Complicating matters are Mitsuko's lover, an art professor, and Heinz's cousin, a Gestapo officer, whose interventions threaten to destroy the love triangle.
