Des is stuck in a mundane job and Julie, his girlfriend, coerces him into proposing by faking a pregnancy to avoid working. Meanwhile, Laurie is trapped in a loveless marriage with Colin, an aspiring writer who refuses to seek employment. The two meet at a dying friend's house, where Laurie invites Des to a rent party at her home. However, their encounter takes a dramatic turn when Colin discovers them in bed together.
