Diego Padilla, a chess champion, wins the Spanish Championship in 1934 and meets Marianne Latour, a French journalist, leading to a romantic relationship and the birth of their daughter. However, their lives take a dramatic turn when Diego is accused of spying by the Germans after fleeing to France with Marianne and imprisoned in an SS prison.
