As World War II breaks out, Frenchmen from all backgrounds join the army, but their hopes are crushed when the Germans swiftly defeat them and Marshall Petain signs a peace agreement with the invaders. Instead of being sent home, the soldiers are imprisoned in a POW camp, where conditions are harsh with limited food and poor medical care.
