In 1801, teenage Chris lives with his poor cobbler father in Odense, Denmark. Chris sets out to find the Garden of Paradise with The Sandman as his guide, encountering fantastical creatures and getting into misadventures along the way. He meets the Little Mermaid, an Emperor, a lost duckling, and Thumbelina, a girl no bigger than his thumb. As Chris searches for the Garden, he learns valuable lessons about life and the importance of perseverance.
