In 1880, a notorious criminal known as The Face wreaks havoc in France, leading to a bank robbery and murder. Wealthy Chevalier Lucio del Gardo offers to save the bank by depositing a large amount of gold, but only if he can marry the owner's daughter, Cecile. However, Cecile is in love with a lower-class clerk, Lucien Cortier, and refuses the engagement. To eliminate the rival, Chevalier frames Lucien using fabricated evidence, manipulating the incompetent Parisian police chief.
