The Flying Scotsman - 100th Anniversary

A legendary steam engine emerged in late autumn, nearly 90 years ago, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the most iconic locomotives in history.

The Flying Scotsman, a legendary steam engine, made history on November 30, 1934, by becoming the first locomotive to officially break the 100mph barrier. Built in 1923, the LNER A1 Class Pacific No. 4472 was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and was originally used for the daily "Flying Scotsman" service from London to Edinburgh.
