The Genius and the Boys background

The Genius and the Boys

Pioneering researcher Carleton Gajdusek's 1950s expedition to Papua New Guinea led to the discovery of mad cow disease, as well as the uncovering of twenty previously unknown Stone-Age cultures.

Carleton Gajdusek, a renowned American Nobel laureate, made groundbreaking discoveries in the 1950s, including the identification of mad cow disease in Papua New Guinea and the discovery of 20 previously unknown stone-age peoples and languages. He traveled extensively, focusing on isolated communities worldwide, and adopted 57 children, mostly boys, to his commune at the National Institutes of Health. However, in the late 1990s, he was accused of abusing a 16-year-old boy from Micronesia, and it was revealed that he was a self-proclaimed pedophile who had sex with numerous children. The documentary features an interview with a survivor of his abuse and input from renowned scientists who considered his sexual behavior of little importance.
