A documentary crew follows five home chefs as they compete in The Golden Apron, a cooking competition sponsored by Fern Foods, which aims to promote their new dijon spread, Gourmandaise. The contestants, from different parts of the country, are Rock Gustafson, a shut-in from Kentucky, Drew and Syd Kenilworth, fiery twins from New York, Anthony Reynolds, an indie line cook from Virginia, Mary Lynn Hoffman, a former TV personality from Colorado, and Bosko, a mysterious figure known as the "Banksy of food". The competition culminates in a final showdown, where one winner will receive a $10,000 prize, a chance to work for Fern Foods, and the coveted Golden Apron.
