Young Robert Shannon, orphaned in Ireland, travels to Scotland to live with his maternal grandparents. Despite his grandfather's tightfisted nature, Robbie finds comfort with his loving grandmother, kind aunt and uncle, and free-spirited great-grandfather. He settles into his new school, befriends Gavin and Alison, and grows to love them as the years pass. As he matures, Robbie's aspirations shift towards medicine, and he dreams of becoming a doctor. With everyone's support except his grandfather's, he works towards a scholarship to escape the local boiler-works and forge a new path.
