Jacques Lantier, a train engineer with a history of violent seizures, and Roubaud, a train conductor, are both working on the same railroad. Roubaud's life takes a dark turn when he discovers his wife Séverine's affair with a wealthy godfather, leading him to commit a murder in a fit of jealousy. Séverine is left an accomplice to the crime.
