The experiment, inspired by the 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment, was reimagined by Tim Burke to test whether ordinary people turn "bad" in a supposedly evil environment. Eight unsuspecting contestants, from diverse backgrounds, thought they were auditioning for a horror film, but were instead locked in a haunted asylum for three days and nights with limited resources. They were monitored on 24 CCTV cameras with no script or direction, and were only provided with an Ouija board for comfort.
