In mythical Japan, a tailor becomes Lord High Executioner and must find someone to execute before the Mikado's arrival. He chooses a minstrel who loves a beautiful woman, but she's also loved by the tailor. The minstrel considers suicide, but the tailor offers a solution: marry the woman for a month, then be executed. However, the minstrel is the Mikado's son, who ran away to avoid marrying an older woman. The Mikado's arrival brings the story to a close.
