Klaus Nomi, a German opera singer, moved to NYC in 1972 after failing to break into professional opera in Germany. He found success in the East Village's New Wave/avant-garde scene, performing outlandish shows that combined opera, electronica, and futuristic costumes. He attracted a large following and eventually signed with RCA, releasing two albums in 1981 and 1982. However, Nomi's career was cut short when he died of AIDS-related illness just a few months after his return to NYC.
