In a war-torn Hungary, a woman flees the Nazi invasion, leaving her 13-year-old twin sons with their estranged grandmother in the countryside. The boys, unfamiliar with their grandmother's miserly and cruel nature, must fend for themselves amidst hunger, cold, and devastation. As they struggle to survive, they abandon traditional moral values and adopt the harsh lessons of their environment, recording their observations and discoveries in a notebook.
