Ira Hamilton Hayes, a 17-year-old Pima Indian, enlists in the Marine Corps during WW2 and forms a lifelong friendship with fellow marine Jim Sorenson. They fight on Mount Suribachi at Iwo Jima, where Ira raises the US flag alongside five others. After Sorenson's death, Ira is sent back to the front lines, struggling with grief and guilt.
