A British man, Mr. Howard, is on a fishing trip in eastern France when Germany invades in 1940. He embarks on a journey to return home, accompanied by two Cavanaugh children, and along the way, his family grows as he takes in more refugees. Upon reaching German-occupied northern France, he faces a new challenge: avoiding detection for speaking English.
