A Sicilian mine worker, Carmelo "Mimí" Mardocheo, faces trouble after voting for the Communist Party instead of the Mafia's candidate. He loses his job and leaves his family to find work in Turin, but ends up in an illegal construction job controlled by the Mafia. When a co-worker dies in an accident, Mimí lies to the mobsters and joins the Communist Party, falling in love with a street vendor and having a son.
