A happily married couple and their 12-year-old son are driving home from a day trip when they're suddenly attacked by a blinding light. They awaken hours later, seemingly unharmed, but soon become plagued by recurring nightmares. As they try to make sense of the strange events, they discover that they've been abducted by aliens, as evidenced by their son's handheld camera that mysteriously started recording after the incident. The family is then pursued by the enigmatic Men in Black, who threaten to kill them if they don't comply with their demands. Faced with skepticism from the police, the trio seeks refuge with a science fiction writer and begins to fight back against their extraterrestrial abductors.
