Dr. Dan Maynard, an American surgeon, and Rita King, a Tangier-born woman, meet in a Shanghai hotel after a police raid. Rita is free to come and go due to her friendship with the new police chief, while Dr. Maynard is bitter and unstable. However, Rita's actions, including helping a young girl receive an emergency operation, change Dr. Maynard's opinion of her. But when a spy hunt reaches a climax and an internee is shot while trying to escape, Dr. Maynard suspects Rita of being the tip-off.
The Shanghai Story
The plot unfolds as Westerners find themselves stranded at Shanghai's Waldorf Hotel, held captive by Chinese Communists who are on the hunt for a suspected spy, following the aftermath of World War II.
