The film follows a five-tank platoon, led by Lieutenant Rawson, as they attempt to break through the German defenses at the Siegfried Line during World War II. The platoon is commanded by Master Sgt. Joe Davis, who is severely wounded and replaced by Staff Sgt. Francis Aloysius Sullivan. Sullivan's aggressive and tactless leadership style earns him the enmity of his men and platoon leader Lieutenant Rawson. Despite his flaws, Sullivan's bravery and strategic thinking lead to successes, but also casualties.
