In post-Civil War Texas, two families, the Zacharys and Rawlins, are deeply connected through their cattle ranching partnership. The arrival of an older man spreads a disturbing rumor: Rachel Zachary, adopted by the family, is of Indian heritage, specifically Kiowa. This news causes tension in the community, threatening relationships between the families and dividing the Zacharys as they try to protect themselves and their property against those who don't want Rachel there, including the Kiowa who claim her as one of their own.
