In 1819, a young cabin boy named Tom Nickerson sets sail on the whaler "The Essex" from Nantucket, expecting a romantic adventure at sea. However, his illusions are quickly shattered by a storm and food shortage. The crew's spirits are briefly lifted when they catch a whale, but soon after, a massive whale attacks and sinks the ship. The survivors take to the long-boats and begin a treacherous 2,000-mile journey to Peru, where only five of the original crew members will ultimately be rescued.
