In 1960s Northern England, Frank Machin, a rugged and driven individual, quickly rises to fame in a local rugby league team owned by Weaver. Machin shares a home with Mrs. Hammond, whose husband was tragically killed in an accident at Weaver's workplace. Despite his desire to connect with Mrs. Hammond, Machin's hot-headed and explosive personality hinder his attempts. His struggles are further complicated by the more straightforward charms of Mrs. Weaver.
