In the vast 8th century Tang dynasty Chinese empire, the silk route is controlled by 36 Buddhist kingdoms, threatened by Turkic nomad tribes and brigand bands. A Japanese scholar, Lai Qimay, is tasked with retrieving refugees from the border lands, while a former imperial lieutenant, Li, seeks redemption as a caravan escort. Lai Qi and Li form an uneasy alliance to protect a caravan carrying a young Buddhist monk and mysterious freight, as they navigate treacherous desert terrain and rival alliances.
