In 1971 Adelaide, Leanne, a aspiring teacher, is more passionate about photography than her studies. She struggles with living at home with her parents and her older sister Bronwyn, who is unhappy in her marriage in a remote town. Their lives are turned upside down when a charismatic American poet, Lou, arrives, encouraging everyone to "seek out the light". The younger generation, including Leanne's neighbor Gary and friend Debra, are drawn to Lou's inspiring message.
