Umberto Ferrari, a pensioner, attends a protest and returns to his humble apartment, where he lives with his dog Flick and is befriended by Maria, a pregnant servant. When his landlady demands rent, Umberto tries to raise money by selling his belongings, but is unable to get a loan. He contracts a sore throat and is hospitalized, delaying his financial troubles. Upon discharge, he discovers his dog is missing and locates him in a dog pound. With nowhere to go, Umberto decides to find a new home for his dog before taking his own life.
