In 1936, General Metaxas declares martial law in Greece, prompting a union leader named Boutros to flee Athens and seek refuge with Margot Santorini, the wealthy and bored wife of a penniless diplomat. As Margot helps Boutros escape, she finds a new sense of purpose and falls in love. The story jumps forward to 1945, where Rico and Raoul, who had aided Margot's escape, meet to discuss her fate. Thirty years later, Margot's daughter visits Greece to uncover the truth about her father's past.
