In a predominantly white Iowa town, a young boy named Flip has big aspirations to become a hip-hop star, often daydreaming of hanging out with Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre. He spends his time practicing his rapping skills in front of the mirror and with his friends James and Trevor, adopting black slang and fashion. Despite his dreams, Flip's life is filled with real-life struggles, including his father's unemployment, his mother's reliance on government assistance, and his girlfriend's pregnancy.
