Bill Hayward, recently paroled after 8 years, returns home to find his 11- and 15-year-old sons struggling to survive on their own. Initially unwilling to take on a parental role, Bill's plans are disrupted when his sons' situation attracts social services' attention. To avoid being sent back to prison, Bill reluctantly agrees to stay with his sons for a week, pretending to care for them. As he bonds with his younger son Jimmy, Bill begins to understand the importance of family and his role as a father.
