Johnny Maverick and his friend Chicopee Nevins rush to Antril Bend, a small oil town offering a $25,000 prize for the first oil well. They discover oil on the outskirts, and Johnny writes a $4000 check, covering it by selling his half-interest to oil promoter Gus Sloane for $7000. Sloane hires a crew, with Johnny's enemy Mile Rawlins as foreman, who sabotages Johnny's rig, killing Chicopee. Confidence man Oliver Westbrook and Nan Dearing conspire to swindle Johnny, with Nan posing as Chicopee's sister, but she falls in love with Johnny and abandons the plan.
