Virgil First Raise wakes up with a hangover and a black eye in a Montana ditch, only to see a vision of his father lying dead beside him. He returns home to find his wife, Agnes, has left him, taking his belongings with her. Virgil sets out to find her, embarking on a journey of drunken encounters, sexual adventures, and mysterious events with the Airplane Man. Along the way, he confronts childhood memories and visions of his lost brother Mose.
