The movie takes place in 1845 Montana during the autumn and winter seasons. The Blackfoot tribe, led by Chief Winterhawk, is struggling with illness, and their friend Guthrie suggests they seek help from nearby settlers. However, the settlers are afraid to help when they learn the tribe is infected with smallpox. Two trappers, Gates and Scoby, offer to take Winterhawk to someone who can cure the illness, but it's a trap. The trappers ambush and kill Winterhawk's braves, and Winterhawk escapes. In retaliation, he kidnaps a young woman, Clayanna, and her brother Cotton from the settlement.
