Twelve-year-old Bobby Graham, an orphan since 1976, relocates to Eagle Rock to live with his aunt and uncle. Despite his uncle's disapproval, Bobby joins forces with the town recluse, Vietnam War veteran Jim Klean, to construct a soap box racing car and participate in the derby, driven by his desire to emulate his late father's creative endeavors.
