Colonization of Mars in the 21st century takes an unexpected turn as initial encounters with hostile native Martians escalate into catastrophic consequences of humanity's destructive actions.
The ill-fated first mission to Mars in 1999 ends in disaster when a Martian's jealousy leads to the murder of the crew. Subsequent expeditions suffer the same fate, as Martians employ hypnosis to deceive humans into thinking they've returned home, ultimately poisoning them once they're off guard.
