While in prison, she had a tumultuous affair with the head of the Bolivian drug cartel, who was in the adjacent men's jail. She used her connection to become the biggest drug dealer in the prison, adopting a seven-year-old orphan girl and bonding with a transgender woman. However, she became addicted to cocaine but recovered to care for her newfound family. A lucky break came when the Pope declared a "Holy Year of Mercy," allowing her to escape with her family to New York before her 26th birthday.
