In 1876, a gold discovery sparks a land rush in Dakota, drawing immigrants to Custer. A lonely cowboy, Dan O'Malley, befriends Lee Carlton and her father, fixing their wagon wheel and flirting with Lee. However, their journey is disrupted when they're attacked and her father is murdered. The outlaws, "Bull" Stanley, Mike Costigan, and "Spade" Allen, rescue Lee and take her to the pioneer camp, where they plan to settle before the land is open to exploration. The corrupt Sheriff Layne Hunter rules with terror, prompting the outlaws to decide Lee needs a husband - and choose Dan for the job. When Hunter's associate Nat Lucas kills Bull's sister, the outlaws vow to take revenge, just as the gold and land rush is about to begin in 1877.
