The Villa D'Oro Hotel and Casino, straddling the Nevada-California border, is a complex web of relationships and secrets. Steve McCluskey, the manager, is a wanted man in California for unpaid alimony and is wary of the authorities. He clashes with Chris Lockwood, the new headlining singer, over her show and his perception of her sense of entitlement. When a gambler's five-year-old daughter, Penny, is left abandoned at the hotel, Steve takes on the responsibility of caring for her, risking the hotel's gaming license if she's discovered. As Steve and his staff grow fond of Penny, he risks being caught by Liz's henchmen and Bernie, the hotel owner, to grant Penny's wish of a trip to Disneyland, accompanied by Chris.
