They assume new identities as soldiers in Napoleon's army and head to Marseilles, where Vidocq meets singer Loretta and becomes embroiled in a web of deceit and crime. After stealing a jeweled garter from Loretta, Vidocq uses his charisma to win the trust of the Marquise de Pierremont and her son, the Minister of Police. He becomes embroiled in a plot to rob the Bank of Paris, but ultimately finds redemption when he falls in love with the Minister's daughter, Therese, and decides to use his new position to make amends and start a new life on the side of the law.
