An elderly Jewish shopkeeper, Mr. Shaddick, takes in a young black boy named Herman, who is trying to escape the turmoil of Harlem through a sponsorship program. Initially, Mr. Shaddick wants to be rid of Herman, but he decides to care for him instead, only to be burdened with delivering bad news, reminiscent of a painful experience from his own past.
